Klunker Commuter

Rechargeable LED headlight concealed inside old headlight shell

Klunker usually refers to the first mountain bikes that were made by the repack guys in norther California. They used old Schwinn truss frame middleweight “clunker” frames to build up their custom bikes.

This Klunker pays homage to both the Klunker mountain bikes and to the Bobber style of custom motorcycle popular in the 1950s.

I had long been fascinated by Girvin pro flex suspension forks. Mainly because they are technically derived from the girder forks used on 1930s Indian Sport Scout motorcycles. So they were just right for this project.

An Indian Sport Scout Bobber

For this bike, we bought a mid 90s Nashbar aluminum Retro Design mountain bike frame (That sort of mimics the old Schwinn Klunkers) and paired it to a Garvin Proflex fork. We had everything powder coated mat black and added a Shimano XT drivetrain, Nomad built wheelset and other classy bits. It looks and rides fantastic.
