By 1990, when this model was introduced, Schwinn was on their last gasp. Their American factories were no longer competitive. So, they tried to hang in there by offering Schwinns manufactured by Giant and other Asian manufacturers. This 684 was Giant’s fairly good attempt at copying the very successful Cannondales. Few were sold.
We stripped, sanded and polished the frame (which took many hours as it was crudely finished under the paint) We replaced all of the components and converted it to a shimano ultegra 1×9 drivetrain. We also stripped the powdercoat finish from and polished the cheapo Shimano Esage crankset.
The end result is a very stylish, light, nimble handling daily commuter.
